Target of the September 8, 2016 OSIRIS-REx Launch

In May 2013 the IAU officially renamed Asteroid 1999 RQ36 to Bennu, the winning entry in the Planetary Society's Name That Asteroid!  contest.

Bennu is the first celestial body since Pluto to be named by a school child!

It was named by Mike P, a then-third grader in Greensboro NC.

Last month the OSIRIS-REx mission launched to explore  the asteroid, returning samples to Earth in seven years (9/24/2023, ~ 9AM)
