Target of the September 8, 2016 OSIRIS-REx Launch

In May 2013 the IAU officially renamed Asteroid 1999 RQ36 to Bennu, the winning entry in the Planetary Society's Name That Asteroid!  contest.

It was named by Mike, a third-grade student in Greensboro NC.

Bennu is the first celestial body since Pluto to be named by a school child!

On September 8th the OSIRIS-REx mission launches to explore  the asteroid, returning samples to Earth in 2023
